Erste Group will offer 10 million euros for Social Enterprise Financing

Andreas Treichl has just announced that Erste Group will offer 10 million euros for Social Enterprise Financing in the region to individuals and institutions launching or operating a social business. Thereby creating one of the most comprehensive and highly funded Social Business support system in the world. This credit programme will be set up in the banks of the Erste Group especially for Social Businesses, offers loans throughout the region with special consideration of the particular situation of organisations and people who have a social mission. Erste will collaborate with established experts in the field, such as Ashoka.

Breakfast with Prof Muhammad Yunus in Bratislava

40 leading business women from Central- and Eastern Europe had  breakfast with Prof Muhammad Yunus this morning in Bratislava. Hosted by Slovenska Sporitelna a group of inspiring business women were eagerly discussing the future of Social Business in CEE. Prof. Muhammad Yunus gave us best practice examples from Bangladesh of business that are “based on selflessness and solve a social problem.” He was encouraging us to pass ideas on to each other, trust in our ability and create non-loss / non-dividend companies to solve the toughest social problems in our region.

Prof Muhammad Yunus at the HUB Vienna

Tonight the founding members of the HUB Vienna signed an agreement with Grameen Creative Lab that they will run the HUB Vienna as a Social Business. Prof Muhammad Yunus called it “a very special occasion” and stressed the importance of Social Businesses focusing on solving social problems in the world. The HUB Vienna will be a place for people with ideas to meet, connect and support each other.

Challenging Racism

We are working on ways how to challenge racism in our societies, moderated by Moritz Waldstein – PROJECT E. Two ideas were discussed: a catering service in schools by migrant mothers in combination with language classes and a designer shop targeting lohas and migrants.

Rudolf Hundstorfer, the Austrian Federal Minister for Labour, Social Affairs and Consumer Protection opened the Social Business Lab in Vienna and announced the start of a new project on May 1st, planning to offer micro credits to unemployed in order to open a business. The AMS (Austrian Public Employment Service) in Vienna and Styria will give out these loans.
